Bernice Higgins

1932 ~ 2014

It is with sadness in our hearts we say goodbye to our aunt, cousin and dear friend Bernice Higgins. Bernice passed away in Pinawa Hospital on September 16, 2014 at the age of 81 years after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She will be forever missed by her Aunt Lillian Seidel, her nieces Kathie Vitti and Debbie Nyssen and their families, along with many cousins and dear friends.

Predeceased by her husband Ken, parents Bill and Lena Kuhn, her brother Gerald Kuhn and his wife Edna.

Bernice was born in Winnipeg on November 13, 1932 and grew up in Seven Sisters Falls. She married her best friend Ken on June 14, 1957. They settled in Whitemouth, where Bernice took a position with Canada Post.  After a 35 year career she retired as Whitemouth Postmaster. Bernice and Ken took time to travel to fun places like Hawaii, Mexico and other tropical places. She had a great sense of humour, loved life and spent quality time with friends and family. She was a great cook and looked forward to family functions where she was known for bringing such things as her famous bean salad. Bernice was a sports fanatic and was very active in curling and golf. One of her favorite pastimes was watching tennis and every year the Tour de France. Family and friends were always very important to Bernice and she was a person who stayed true to her commitments.  She was a very special lady and will be missed by many.

A special thank you to Dr. Bruneau, Cancer Care Pinawa and the staff at the Pinawa Hospital for helping Bernice through her journey with cancer.  Thanks to Tamara for her compassion and vigilance during Bernice’s last hours.

George Schultz, you were her rock, and we would like to express our gratitude for helping our Aunt over the years.

A funeral service for Bernice will be held on Saturday September 27, 2014 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in River Hills at 12:00 p.m. with burial to follow in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Cancer Care or to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund.
