1928 ~ 2022

It is with great sadness and love that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Harry George Wasiuta. Dad was predeceased by his wife Mary, father George and mother Maria, brothers Gus, Walter, John and sisters Anne and Mary. Throughout his life Dad was a gentle and giving man, full of hopefulness and kindness right up to when he passed away peacefully in his sleep June 1, 2022 at the age of 93.

Dad only wanted the best for his sons Harvey and Vern. He also never held back his love for his daughters-in law Jamie Kroeker and Adrienne Diner and his grandson Bryan. He took great pride caring for his flower gardens both in Transcona and Belair Manitoba spending many hours working with the love of his life Mary Wasiuta (mom) in the yard.

Dad was a survivor, his mother and twin died during childbirth, but he accepted life and was close to all of his sisters and brothers, especially his brother Gus. Dad began a lifelong career with CN Rail from a young age because he had to help the family and continued his commitment to the railway for more than 40 years. He loved being a part of CN Rail, teaching welding, being a rules instructor and in helping everyone around him to be a better person. He spent many years working across Canada supporting all facets of rail safety, leading in the development of continuous rail program in both Canada and the US. Dad faced all challenges head on, helped people anyway he could and received a special commendation from the President of CN in 1958, when he saved three children from drowning in a Northern British Columbia river. Upon his retirement he was asked to go to Bangladesh many times to help people and teach welding as part of a Canadian program supporting the development of the Bangladesh Railway.

He valued his exceptional care at the Simkin Centre and all the Homecare staff that cared for him when he lived at the Devonshire House. He always spoke highly of everyone who attended to his needs which were many as he grew older. We never actually heard a single complaint from him. Though he reserved choice words for politicians not doing enough for people, or Jets and Bomber players that didn’t play up to their potential.

We miss you Dad and your smile. We are grateful for your love and patience throughout your life. You will be greatly missed by Vern Wasiuta and Jamie Kroeker, Harvey Wasiuta and Adrienne Diner, Bryan Kroeker and Daniel Vida as well as many other family members.

A funeral liturgy will be held on Tuesday, June 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church, Regan Ave, Elma, Manitoba at the end of Hwy 15. Pallbearers will be Vern Wasiuta, Steve Wasiuta, Grant Clark, Rick Millar, Bryan Kroeker, and Dan Vida.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Manitoba Provincial Council at info@uccmanitoba.ca.

Condolence from David Wasiuta on June 6th, 2022 1:43 pm

Harvey and Vern my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Uncle Harry was a wonderful man, he had a beautiful family and will be greatly missed. He’s now in heaven with Mary, Grampa George and all his brothers & sisters smiling down on all of us. I have a number of fond memories of all his stories about Elma & the farm, working on CNR as well in Bangladesh, his neighbor friends and how much he enjoyed his flowers & garden. I made a donation to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress on his behalf.
Sending lots of hugs, Cuz David.
