GLEN LARRY ALTSTADT

June 12, 1954 – March 2, 2026

Early on March 2, after a short and extremely frustrating illness, where there seemed to continually be more questions than answers, Glen died peacefully in the home that he loved so much, with his wife Linda and his beloved cats Precious, Brandy, Luna and Leo. All 4 cats are helping to write this (especially Leo who is trying to chew on the corner of the computer screen!)

He grew up on the family farm in Seven Sisters and very early developed passions for the land, especially gardening, and cats of all varieties. At a very young age he became interested in vehicles and equipment which became a life long journey of fixing all varieties of cars and trucks. Motors were switched from old vehicle to old vehicle on many weekends in his teenage years. And later in life he restored a number of antique tractors including his Dad’s first tractor a 1952 Farmall A and a 1964 Farmall 140 which were proudly displayed at local parades. His Dad was a multi talented man and early on saw Glen’s ability to build and fix things. He taught him carpentry skills which later allowed us to build our own home.

Glen worked for years with his brother Kenny both trucking and on the farm. He watched Kenny’s skills with welding and metal work, but never actually had to do any of it until Kenny’s passing in 2005. Then Glen bought a welder and taught himself metalwork. He was the go-to guy when anything needed fixing in the neighbourhood.

In 2005 he went to work at SunGro. His first job there was running an enormous peat harvester which even he found a bit intimidating at first sight. He loved the outside work there and eventually went to the South Julius bog where he did not only peat harvesting but also equipment maintenance at the more remote site which was ideal with his skills.

His generosity with our garden was well known by family and neighbour's. And his barbequed prime rib roast and many other wonderful meals shared with family and friends will be greatly missed.

Glen was predeceased by his parents, William and Hulda, and by his five siblings, Arnold, Denis, Kenny, Leona and Ronald. He was also predeceased by many 4-legged friends who touched our lives over the years including his special cat Milkshake. He will be missed by his many friends, neighbour's and family members.

A huge thankyou to Dr. Bruneau who was by our side throughout out Glen’s illness trying to help us unravel the mystery. Also thanks to the medical teams at both the Pinawa Hospital and at HSC who tried their best to help a patient who only wanted to “go home”. Despite the medical teams doing their very best, there were only more questions not answers. An extreme effort was made on that last Sunday by the incredible staff at HSC to help make Glen’s wish come true to get him back to his home. Our gratitude can never be fully expressed especially to Alex, Jon, Ashley and many other outstanding staff who were on shift that day and made sure everything possible was done to get him back to his home safely and successfully with only hours to spare. We can never thank them enough!

Our thanks also to so many friends and family who were by our side throughout these last few months. And to neighbour's and family members who cared for Destiny and the cats in the last few days so Linda could be at Glen’s side at the various hospitals trying valiantly from keeping him from walking out the doors!

No funeral is planned, but there will be a party at his home in the early summer.
