The Journey Home

There’s a path that leads to a turn in the road,

And we each must travel there,

Where the Father waits to take us home to the shelter of his care,

Where happiness and peace and joy replace the tears and pain,

And our loved one rests in the arms of God to sweetly live again.

Joyce took the journey home on September 3, 2026.

She was the true definition of a home maker. She was a loving and caring wife to Gordon for almost 65 years. She raised two children and together farmed for over 50 years, which was no easy task. For those who knew her, she displayed a quiet strength and remained steadfast in her faith. She was most happy in her kitchen where she cooked up delicious meals or canned the bounty of her garden. No one ever left her home hungry.

She was born in Golden Bay MB in December 1938. She then moved to Whitemouth MB in March 1953 with parents William and Lydia Buss and a growing family of siblings. Joyce had the opportunity to work at the Village Inn Restaurant in Seven Sisters Falls MB for a couple of years. It was there that she met Gordon and they were married in June 1957. It was on the last Friday in the month because she wanted a June wedding!

She always enjoyed entertaining family and friends. Never one to be idle, she was involved with area craft shows, club executives, and published a cookbook. In her later years she participated with quilting groups at church. If there was a ball of yarn around, you would find her making afghans, sweaters and mittens. She credited all her crocheting and knitting to keeping her fingers limber in her final years. As she said, “you have to keep moving or else you’ll stiffen up.” This is a motto we all should follow.

Mourning her loss are her children, Valerie and Bryce, Wayne and Sandra. Her sisters, Eileen, Agnes, Emily, Shirley, Carol, Sharon, Betty. Her brothers, Oskar and Wilfred. Predeceasing her were brothers, Herman and Lawrence, and sister Darlene.

Joyce will be laid to rest beside her husband Gordon on September 8, 2026. Interment at the Oldenburg Cemetery will take place at 1:30 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, River Hills, Manitoba at 2:00 p.m.

Joyce and her family are very grateful for the care and assistance provided by her medical caregivers over the years. They had given her the ability to remain in her own home as long as possible and made her final days comfortable.
