Lorne Otto
Chlup
Mar 29, 1937 — May 11, 2026
Lorne Chlup passed away peacefully on May 11th, in Winnipeg at the age of 89. He will be remembered for his steady kindness, quiet dedication, and the deep pride he took in his family, especially the love he had for his grandchildren, Taylor and Matthew.
Lorne is lovingly remembered by his wife, Hazel; his daughter, Pam (Russ); his son, Jeff (Nadia); and his cherished grandchildren, Taylor (Osten) and Matthew, who brought him endless joy. He is also survived by his sister, Elaine (Greg); his in-laws, Ed (Dana Lee) and Linda (Ron); as well as many incredible nieces and nephews.
Lorne was greeted into heaven by those he missed dearly: Parents Caroline and Otto, mother and father-in-law Elsie and Roy, brother Edward and sister-in-law Dorthy, sister Esther and brother-in-law Walter, sister Theresa and brother-in-law Osborne, sister Violet, sister Florance, and brother-in-law Finn, Evelyn and brother-in-law Ron.
Born March 29th, 1937 to Otto and Caroline, Lorne was raised in Dominion City, Manitoba. As a young man, he moved to Winnipeg in search of new opportunities, where he met the love of his life, Hazel. Together, they built a wonderful life, raising their two children on Fleming Avenue in East Kildonan, where Lorne took great pride in maintaining a “golf course quality” lawn. Lorne also loved working on Hazel’s parents farm, often spending his time off/vacation time to help work the fields, run grain, or what ever chores were needed.
Lorne’s first job in Winnipeg was with Perth’s dry cleaning, and he later joined the City of Winnipeg, beginning as an elevator operator at the old police station on Rupert Avenue. He went on to work at the Public Safety Building as a chauffeur for the Winnipeg Police. In this role, no two days were ever the same. He could be called upon to drive an ambulance, the Paddy wagon or a tow truck, or to chauffeur the Chief of Police, the Mayor, and other dignitaries throughout the city.
Lorne suffered from severe arthritis and chose to retire at the age of 53 after 31 years of dedicated service. While he often endured significant pain, it rarely slowed him down, and he was never, ever heard complaining.
He went on to enjoy a long retirement of 36 years. Lorne embraced life fully, travelling with Hazel and always finding something to fix. He had a natural talent for repairing just about anything, and his grandchildren would always say, “Give it to Grandpa, he can fix anything!” when something wasn’t working. During his retirement, Lorne took on a new job, in which he was self employed. He started a lucrative soda and beer can recycling empire. It wasn’t a safe place to be around Lorne if you were an empty aluminum can. He would diligently sort, crush, and take into the appropriate place to earn his wage, AKA “grandkids” fund.
Following his retirement, Lorne and Hazel moved from their longtime home into apartment living, eventually settling in West Kildonan. Rumor has it, there wasn’t enough to fix in the first apartment, they had to move to another apartment.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Extendicare Maples Personal Care Home, Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home, and to the many doctors and nurses who supported Lorne along the way. Special thanks to Sobering Funeral Chapel for their compassion, care, and assistance during this difficult time.
A celebration of Lorne’s life will be held on May 19th, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Luke’s Zion Lutheran Church, 2903 McPhillips St, Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba https://secure.alzheimer.mb.ca/, the Arthritis Society https://donate.arthritis.ca, or a charity of your choice.
Lorne will be deeply missed and forever remembered, especially by his loving family who will carry his memory with them always.
“Rest in peace. We love you. We live because of you!”
