Obituary

With much gratitude for her life well-lived, we announce the passing of Marian Sylvia Wurch, 91 at Pinecrest Home for the Aged in Kenora, Ontario on July 10, 2026. She lived most of her life in Dryden, Ontario, as the beloved wife and partner in ministry, of Irvin Wurch. He preceded her in death on February 10, 2010.

Marian was born in Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba to Martin and Beda Nicholson on November 13, 1934. She was predeceased by her son Daniel, siblings Ellen (Ralph) Smith, Edith (William) Beattie, Clara (Norman) McComb, Gladys (Mike) Kolomy, Eric Nicholson, and Bertil Nicholson.

Marian and Irwin were married in St. Ouens, Manitoba on April 19, 1952. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Glenda (John) Nordstrom and Cynthia (Shawn) Slagle, all of Ottawa, Illinois; granddaughter Rebecca Wurch came to live with them at age seven and held a very special place in Marian’s heart. Marian also doted on their other grandchildren; Melissa (Andrew) Terry, Andrea (Joshua) Schmidt, Gentry (Lindsey) Nordstrom, Kristen (Daniel) Propp, Justin (Grace) Slagle, Allison (Ryan) Clark and Nicholas (Savannah) Slagle. She will be missed by eleven great grandchildren. She is survived by her brother Harold (Joanne) Nicholson as well as her sister-in-law Norma Nicholson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marian was known for her gracious hospitality and loving mothering. Her nurturing care extended beyond her family to Vernon and Viola Murray as well as the numerous children she provided daycare for. A skilled cook, seamstress and gardener, she brought beauty and delight to all those she welcomed into her home.

Many thanks to the Pinecrest staff for their compassionate and diligent care and to her nephew Rob Wittmeier and his wife Ruth, who went above and beyond to care for Marian’s needs for many years.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 18 at 11:00 at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Avenue E., Beausejour with Pastor Robert Wittmeier officiating. Friends and family may gather from 10:00-11:00 for a visitation. Mark Dewey, Matt Hale, Bruce Nicholson, Darrell Nicholson, Andy Wurch and Doug Wurch will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow in the St. Ouens Pentecostal Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to a charity of choice.
