It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather, Melvin Barker, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the age of 84, at the Pine Falls Hospital.

Melvin will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife Yvonne, daughter Tammy (Tony), Son Trevor (Michelle), grandchildren Dakota, Hunter and many special others.

Dad was faithful, loving, caring and funny. He started work at an early age, spending time on the trapline with Grandpa Barker. This started his strong work ethic which carried him throughout his life, whether he was working on the East Side Road with tractor trains, Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Highways or his back yard. He took great pride in his home, work, and vehicles, but especially his vehicles. You couldn’t find a scratch or a spec of dust in them.

Dad held a strong, quiet and private presence, he did not like to be the center of attention. He held a strong faith, read his bible every day and when he could no longer attend church, he would watch on tv. He also loved to read books. Every time he finished a book, he would mark the date at the end of the book, so he knew which ones he read. He had all kinds of lists as well; he was very meticulous with dates and numbers.

He enjoyed visits from his friends, especially when they would speak Ojibway with him. He loved his language and it showed when he would speak with them.

Many nights, during the hockey season, he could be found watching his life-long favourite team, the Montreal Canadiens. No matter if they won or not, it didn’t matter as long as he watched them.

While in the hospital, dad developed a special bond with some of the health care professionals. Special thanks to Ashley, Dorielle, and Eileen who took such good care of dad. Their care, compassion and empathy never went unnoticed. Thank you to Dr. Manlulu for the excellent care he provided as dad’s doctor, and to the nurses who also provided great care.
