Vernon "Vern" Ronald
Schatkowsky
August 2, 1938 – February 20, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Vernon "Vern" Ronald Schatkowsky, who departed this world on February 20, 2026, in Pinawa, Manitoba, at the age of 87. Vern was born on August 2, 1938, and dedicated his life to both his family and his community.
Vern began his entrepreneurial journey at the young age of 22, in 1960, when he established his own business Vern’s Electric. Known for his unwavering commitment to service, he worked tirelessly on local contracts, always ready to lend a helping hand, available 24/7. Even after retiring, although he never really retired, the shop door was always open. He found immense joy in the daily visits from friends and neighbors. One of his favourite pastimes was driving around town on his scooter talking with everyone on the street.
A man of many passions, Vern was an avid curler and a devoted baseball player, playing alongside the Whitemouth Frontiers. He was an avid Dodgers Fan. His sense of adventure took him to Hawaii time and again, as well as on numerous cruises and camping trips to British Columbia. He also dedicated part of his life to serving as a volunteer firefighter and ambulance attendant, making significant contributions to the safety of his community. Vern was actively involved in many boards, showcasing his commitment to civic engagement.
Hunting was a cherished pastime for Vern, especially after retirement, when he enjoyed these outings with Wendell, Maureen, and his grandson Owen. These moments were not just about the hunt; they were opportunities for connection and shared experiences that he deeply valued.
Vern is survived by his loving wife Helen, with whom he shared 69 years of marriage. He leaves behind his sons Wendell (Maureen) and Craig and his family, and grandson Owen (Desiree) both of whom brought him great pride and joy. He is also survived by his brother John, sister Wilma, and sister-in-law Arlene who all shared in the rich tapestry of his life.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents Julius and Elizabeth, his son Brian, and his siblings: Jeanine (Rudy), Dori (Alex), Alfie (Helen), sister-in-law Rose and brother in-law George.
Vern Schatkowsky will be remembered not only for his contributions to the community but also for his kindness, charisma, and the genuine love he had for those around him. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched, and he will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Thank you to all the staff at Pinawa Hospital for the excellent care and compassion he received.
Cremation has taken place and a private family graveside will take place later this year.
Donations in Vern’s memory may be made to Whitemouth Rec. Association, Box 173, Whitemouth, Manitoba R0E 2G0 or a charity of your choice.
