October 31, 1951 – January 9, 2020

It is with sadness that the family announce the sudden passing of Steven on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at the Beausejour Hospital.

Steven leaves behind his wife Lynn of 46 years, two daughters, Lisa Gagne (Dan) and Robin Bourke (Shane) and son Mark Fosty (Kandace) and six beautiful grandchildren, Coen and Loch Gagne, Seth and Reese Bourke and Maxton and Logan Fosty.

He also leaves behind sisters Gloria Crognali (Rene) and Mildred Betker (Wilf) as well as sisters-in-law, Dianna Fosty and Cindy Fosty and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Dan and Anne Fosty and his brothers Richard Fosty and Bob Fosty.

Steven was born on October 31, 1951 in Beausejour, Manitoba and spent the majority of his life living on the family farm in the Glenmoor area.  A good part of the 1970s were spent in Winnipeg during which he married and started his family.  Farming was his passion and when the opportunity arose in 1979 to move back to his childhood home, he was able to begin his true calling as a farmer. He worked tirelessly on the farm and trucked on the ice roads in the winter. He was proud to be the third generation on the family farm and very happy to know his son was going to carry it on to the fourth with the possibility of his grandsons carrying it on to the fifth.  He was always thinking ahead.

Steven loved to fish and most of the summer family holidays were at lakes near enough for him to take a quick drive home to check the crops. He also loved to hunt and usually had a yearly deer or moose hunt with his friends. There were many good times had in the moose shacks up north. I know there are many good stories those hunters never shared with their wives.

When the children got older he took advantage of the time off in winter to travel. Usually to warmer climates.  A lot of good memories and good friends were made on these trips.

Steven was very proud of his grandchildren and his biggest joy came from their visits. He spent hours building race tracks, fixing quads and dune buggies, and stocking up on favorite foods in preparation for their visits.

Steven was taken from us suddenly and unexpectedly on January 9th but we know the road ahead for him would not have been the road he chose.  We thank God for giving him peace and for the time we had with him.

We thank Dr. Van Rensburg, the staff at East Gate Lodge and at the Beausejour Hospital for taking good care of Steven and helping us try to understand and deal with this terribly unfair disease (Dementia).

In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Beausejour Hospital TV Fund or the Alzheimer’s Society.

Cremation will take place and as per Steven’s wishes there will not be formal funeral.

Condolence from Jack and Toy Heemskerk-Rayer on January 12th, 2020 4:17 am

Dearest Lynn and family,

So many good memories, from the very first party, where you made us feel at home, to seeding and harvesting, Blueberry pies and lovely dinners and good times in the old kitchen, discussing crops, the weather, the grain prices and growing canola. Christmas spent with the cabbage patch dolls. Your mom in the kitchen, helping out at many times. The warmth of your house, which you made into a home. Going to Brandon where we had to order extra meatballs so we could enjoy another drink. All the visits with Richard and Pat and the deer sausage made. The surprise party you organized for our wedding. The first Dutch pea soup I made with the real thing (trotters and hocks). Visiting Steven’s parents with you in Beausejour… Just too many to recount here.
The times later on that we visited each other back in Canada and in Holland, and – in retrospect – realizing that Steven grew more and more quiet with each visit. We found him changed.. what an insidious disease Dementia is! It robbed you slowly of the essence of what was him!

But what remains are the memories of the friend he was. And that is the man Jack and I mourn.
He enriched our lives just by being!

We are sending all of you our love. You are in our thoughts and we hug you across the miles.

Toy & Jack

Condolence from Mildred Betker on January 12th, 2020 9:47 pm

Lynn, Lisa (Dan), Robin (Shane) & Mark (Kandice)

Words seem inadequate to express our feelings on hearing of Steven’s passing. In reality, his debilitating illness took him away from us several years ago. His quality of life was taken away from him. His world was turned upside down. But, the Lord had much better plans for Steven. He took Steven’s hand and said, come with me into eternal heavenly rest. There you will be forever blessed with peace, glory, contentment and forgiveness of all your earthly sins. Let the memories of Steven provide you with comfort and serve as guidance. A father’s guiding hand always will sit on the shoulders of his children.

We extend our deepest sympathy to each of you during this time. Our prayers and blessings are with you. Take comfort in knowing that we share your pain.

Love & Sympathy,
Mildred & Wilf

Condolence from Richard and Pat Rattai on January 14th, 2020 12:17 am

Fr: Pat and Richard Rattai
To: Lynn and Family

Our deepest sympathy to you and all of your family.
Yes, so many great memories of our past times together as friends and families.
Even though Steven put so much of his time to his passion of farming he also knew how to enjoy family and friends gatherings.
After pondering and delaying for so long all of our times together trying to remembering the highlights of our encounters and then reading all of the other peoples condolences I realized all their experiences were similar. “Steven was the Steven we all knew.
Also Patrick’s comments that that stories you may have heard about hunting were untrue. I would have to disagree. It is true that Steven was an excellent cook. I believe that Patrick and Gary would agree as well. Oh and he did an immaculate job of tidying up all of our mess.
Toy has defined so very well “What an insidious disease Dementia is! It robbed you {and your family} slowly what was him!”
The passing of a loved one is never easy, having to live through dementia makes it so much worse for families.
Pat and Richard Rattai

My deepest sympathy to the Fosty family on the passing of such a wonderful man. I always enjoyed running into Steven and catching up. Enjoyed the stories and will always remember his smile. “It broke your hearts to lose him, but he did not go alone, for part of you went with him the day God called him home.”

Condolence from Debbie & Rick Stefansson on January 27th, 2020 1:38 pm

We are so deeply saddened to hear of Steven’s passing. Sooo many memories both Rick & I have, back in the day on the farm, CAM, so many meetings, fun times when you & Steven, Jack, Toy, Dianne, Stan, Lorraine, Gary et al got together with my parents. Both on the farm in Green Oak and their place in Pinawa Bay. Steven had such a great sense of humour, always had that twinkle in his eye. He loved to tease, always genuine and from the heart. Since his illness, I’ve often thought of those days and miss them. The illness can rob the person of who they were, but will never take away our memories of who Steven truly was – a great friend with a kind and gentle soul. Our deepest condolences to you Lynn, and you Lisa, Robin, and Mark.
