Hellar Prysiazniuk

March 28, 1940 — March 28, 2023

1940 ~ 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our husband, father, Gigi and Great-Gigi, Hellar Prysiazniuk. Hellar passed away peacefully on January 14, 2023 at Beausejour Hospital at the age of 82.

Hellar was born on June 14, 1940 in Pine River, Manitoba, the youngest son in a family of twelve children. He spent his childhood on the family farm in the Rosa District near Pine River, Manitoba and then moved to Winnipeg to attend Teacher’s College. He spent several years teaching before marrying Shirley (Moshenko) and settling on the family farm where they raised their family and operated a grain and cattle farm. Shortly before retirement, they were presented with a Century Farm award. In addition to his involvement in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and Taras Shevchenko Hall, he was happy to lend a helping hand to the neighbours in their close-knit community. He enjoyed a good party or celebration and to add to the festivities, would occasionally bring out his accordion. He would love to fire up the outdoor bake oven, and with Shirley’s help, bake buns, bread and cinnamon buns for family, friends, neighbours and school children to enjoy.

Hellar and Shirley retired in 2006 and moved to Beausejour, Manitoba where they made many new friends and enjoyed travelling throughout Canada and the U.S. During his retirement Hellar enjoyed camping in the Duck Mountains and the Whiteshell, gardening, caring for his fruit trees, wine-making and mushroom and berry picking. He spent many hours carving diamond willow and crafting beautiful pieces of furniture that his family and friends will cherish always. Hellar’s greatest joy was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will forever be remembered for his keen ability to fix just about anything, and his wise counsel and guidance will be sorely missed.

Hellar was predeceased by his father Michael in 1994, his mother Eugenia (Toporowski) in 2000, his sisters Olga, Celia and Margaret, brothers Nick, Peter, Terry and Russell, father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Jean Moshenko and brothers-in-law Tony, Milton, Eddie, Ray, Steve, Norman, Roman and Ralph.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Shirley of 59 years, son Grant Prysiazniuk (Sheree), daughter Adrienne and son-in-law Don Conley, grandchildren Dorian (Lindsay) Conley, Tyson Conley (Essex), Kaitlin Prysiazniuk and Marley Prysiazniuk, great-grandchildren Dylan and Aubrey. Also survived are his sisters Shirley Prysiazniuk, Nettie Pretula, Vicky Dzikowski and Jeanette Shewchuk (Rick), sisters-in-law Beryl Pressey, Gladys Prysiazniuk, Barbara Pressey, Elsie Shemeluk, Ollie Moshenko and brothers-in-law Robert (Margaret) Moshenko, David (Linda) Moshenko, and many nieces, nephews, godchildren, good friends and neighbours.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date, as per Hellar’s wishes.

In lieu of flowers, if family and friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Beausejour Hospital TV Fund, Box 1614, Beausejour MB R0E 0C0.
