Pastor Jacob Arthur Frederick (Jack), of Pinawa MB, passed away peacefully on July 15th. Jack had been bravely battling lung cancer since March and had the opportunity to say farewell to his children, grandchildren, many friends and extended family members. Those who knew Jack, knew someone quick to laughter, always ready with a story to share and never hesitant to lend a hand.
Jack was predeceased by his father Albert, mother Wilhelmina, brother Richard and great-grandson Nicholas.
Jack was born March 13,1932 in Transcona MB and lived a life filled with great experience, dedicated service and devotion to family and his faith. Jack’s early life included work with the CNR, the RCAF, NASA (on the first satellite tracking system), the Post Office and Atomic Energy. Along the way he and his wife of 70 years, Valerie, built a family of four children, with stops in Toronto ON, St John’s NL, Transcona and Pinawa. His devotion to Christ was always strong and in mid-life Jack followed his calling and attended WLU Seminary in Waterloo ON into the Lutheran ministry where he served as Pastor and then missionary for more than 45 years. “Pastor Jack” was beloved by family, friends and parishioners from Sullivan Township/Williamsford to Midland to Windsor and then overseas to Cameroon and Guyana. Jack continued serving in Manitoba Synod as a supply preacher into his 90’s.
Jack was a lifelong hockey fan, coach and player (into his 80’s) rooting on the Habs and Jets! He was also an avid fisherman and loved nothing better than being out in his boat trolling for “the big one”. In his later years Jack was a weekly fixture on the Pinawa Golf Course (where I’m sure he was their senior member).
Jack is survived by his wife Valerie, children Glenn (Cathy), Allan (Nicole), Lori Nadeau (Pierre), Jacqueline Kehler (Terry), brothers Lorne (Louellen), Donald (Patricia), 16 grandchildren, 18 great-children and numerous extended family. They will carry forward his legacy of kindness, laughter and story telling.
A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at Sobering Funeral Chapel, Beausejour, MB (date to be announced).
In lieu of Flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Lutheran World Relief. The family would also like to acknowledge the care and support Jack received by the medical teams at Pinawa Hospital and HSC.
Matthew 4:19 “Come, follow me”, Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
