On January 9th, 2026, our lives changed forever when we learned of her sudden and tragic passing.
Born February 15th, 1947, in Calgary Alberta, the first-born child, grandchild, caring and kind from the start. She grew up in Lethbridge, Alberta with her three younger sisters. After high school she went on to study Education at the University of Lethbridge where she met her husband, Glen. They quickly started their family and moved to Pinawa, Manitoba in the spring of 1968. She raised her four children before working for the Manitoba 4-H Council for a few years and then starting a position at AECL. She taught piano lessons and music theory to many young people within the community, and anyone who shared a lesson with Jackie would have witnessed her immense talent. Jackie’s life in Pinawa was full of music, family, and community, her faith and quiet kindness were her guiding principles in all things.
Family was incredibly important to Jackie. Her greatest passion in life was being a wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and her most recent promotion to great grandma (Gigi) came by her naturally. She was invested in each of her relationships and formed deep bonds with her children and grandchildren, individually taking time to share special moments with each of them. Dance recitals, school plays, soccer matches, figure skating, rhythmic gymnastics, hockey games and so much more, she attended everything she could and was always the loudest cheerleader. Each day started with Glen by her side, completing the daily Wordle and Canuckle puzzles. She filled her summers with family time. Early summers were spent travelling back to Alberta to reconnect with both Glen’s and her parents and siblings. Travel trips in the camper across Canada and the USA where she taught us all the spirit of adventure and the love of the outdoors. This extended to the grandchildren where weeks were spent at Rushing River and Birds Hill Park exploring endlessly, swimming and many, many ice cream treats!! More recently, now with grown up grandchildren, meeting Reede and Alysha in Beausejour for a delectable lunch at Le Beau Fudgerie, weekend getaway to Steep Rock with Jessica and Brandon, road trips to the states with Cole and Jared, golf rounds in Calgary with Jackson and delighting in Keanan’s sense of humour, second only to her own.
Her dedication to providing care to Donovan was exemplary and represented the kind of mother and person she was. She spent many of her days at the care home, where she was a not only a caregiver to Donovan but a friend and listening ear to many staff, residents, and their families.
Her generous and caring nature continued throughout her life. She valued volunteerism and made conscious efforts to be involved in many organizations in Pinawa over the years. Her longest volunteering commitment has been to the Pinawa Health Auxiliary as a board member, and most notably (to her grandchildren at least) the dedicated stocker of the Pinawa Hospital’s vending machine. Saturday evenings were spent at the Pinawa Golf & Country Club helping with “Chase the Ace”. But it went beyond those visible contributions, she gave generously to charities and causes and was the person who always offered to buy the gas attendant a hot chocolate on a cold winter day. Her heart was pure gold.
Music was in her blood. She loved all genres of music and could be heard “belting out” any tune with her kids or grandkids in the car and dancing in her home!! When we think of a perfect coif, a jewellery stack, a game of skip-bo, a logic or jigsaw puzzle, a touch of sarcasm with a twinkle in her eye, a sneaky sweet treat, we will think of Jackie. Her infectious smile will be forever missed. She was an amazing lady who loved fiercely and gave selflessly of herself.
Survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Glen, her children Muffy (Todd, Jackson, Erin, Reede), Leanne (Kelly, Jessica, Brandon, Oakley, Alysha, Keanan), Rhonda (Brent, Cole, Jared), Donovan. Also, her extended family: Darlene Waterhouse, Judy Waterhouse, Al Snider (Colleen Grover), Joan and Melvin Nemecek, Faye and Brent Kozak and numerous other loved ones. She was predeceased by her parents Jack and Ileen Waterhouse, her in-laws Carroll and Josephine Snider, her sister Vickie Burns, brother-in-law and sister-in-law George and Sherry Snider.
There will be no formal service, but the family will gather in her favorite months to celebrate her life, as she desired. She walked on earth as an angel but has now earned her wings and will rejoice in his presence forever. To honor Jackie, pay it forward with an act of kindness and think of her. Donations, in her memory, can be made to the Pinawa Health Auxiliary through the Pinawa Foundation. (P.O. Box 100, Pinawa, MB, R0E 1L0; email: info@pinawafoundation.org)
