Jerry Arthur Martino

December 23, 1932 — February 1, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jerry Arthur Martino, at the age of 93, on Sunday Feb 1, 2026 in Pinawa, MB. Jerry was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife Sheila, son Jason (Kelly) and grandchildren Jillian and Jenna; sister Marcia and brother David of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his parents, Helen and John Martino.

Born in 1932, Jerry grew up in Winnipeg first in the downtown and later in River Heights. During his childhood, Jerry enjoyed trips to the family farm along the Birch River north-east of Hadashville. As a teenager, Jerry fell in love with a St. James girl with whom he would share his life.

Jerry attended the University of Manitoba studying Mechanical Engineering, graduating in 1958. He was very proud of this accomplishment and wore his iron ring throughout his life. In 1958, he accepted a position with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited at the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories in Ontario where he worked in the mechanical department of the NRU research reactor. With the development of the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment, Jerry and Sheila were excited to return back to Manitoba in 1964 where Jerry continued his engineering work in Pinawa. Jerry worked in site-wide maintenance and operations, eventually becoming the Director of Maintenance, Manufacturing and Materials division before he retired in 1989.

Jerry truly enjoyed life in Pinawa and was fortunate to have made many close-knit friendships that lasted a lifetime. Annual Christmas tree hunts, the Pinawa Birthday weekend, and activities like golf and curling became cherished time with friends who became a ‘second family’ to him and Sheila. Jerry enjoyed staying active with cross country and downhill skiing and hosting pool parties for family and friends. He was famous for his keen attention to the pool water to ensure it was always ‘sparkling clean’.

In his retirement years, Jerry first kept busy chairing the expansion of the Pinawa Golf Club to 18 holes. They had the opportunity to take memorable trips abroad and driving trips to the mountains and across Canada to visit family. Jerry enjoyed taking Sheila out for leisurely car rides to try new restaurants, going to EMCA concerts and live theater. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his two granddaughters.

Many thanks to the care and kindness of the nurses, doctors and staff of the Pinawa hospital and all those members of the community who dropped by to cheer their spirits. A celebration of life will be held for family and friends at a later date. Donations may be made to the Pinawa Foundation http://pinawafoundation.org/ or a charity of your choice.
