Larrie James Somerville

April 19, 1950 — August 21, 2025

Larrie James Somerville, 75, of Garson, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025, with his wife by his side after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on April 19, 1950, in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, to James and Mary Somerville. Larrie was the youngest of three siblings and grew up in Oakville, Manitoba, where he attended school before graduating high school in Portage la Prairie. He went on to earn his education degree in Brandon, Manitoba.

Larrie's passion for teaching was evident throughout his career. He taught high school in Beausejour, Manitoba, and dedicated more than 40 years to his students before retiring in June 2015. He received a recognition award from the Sunrise Teachers Association for his long standing service. Larrie had a deep love for science and delighted in teaching chemistry, a passion he was able to share with his many students.

Outside of the classroom, Larrie's other passions included sports, gardening, and horticulture. He was a die-hard fan of the Blue Jays, Maple Leafs, and Man U, and loved nothing more than watching his favorite teams play. In his younger years, he was a valuable member of the infamous Fungus slow-pitch team, where he made lifelong friends and countless cherished memories. He also enjoyed many years at the Beausejour curling club. Larrie found joy in being outdoors and working in the garden. Together, him and Karen tended to a large garden and yard that kept them busy and happy.

Larrie is survived by his wife of 34 years, Karen Borkowsky; his daughter, Mary Somerville; his son, Rob Somerville (Kara); his step-daughter, Colleen MacIvor (Mark); and his grandchildren, Brett (Melissa), Nola, Janie, Carter, Alec, Matthew, and Justin. He also leaves behind his great-grandchild, Dax, his sister, Kathleen (Stan) Rayner, and many nieces and nephews. He will also be greatly missed by his little buddy, Joe the cat.

He was predeceased by his parents, James and Mary Somerville, and his brother, Ken.

In accordance with Larrie's wishes, there will be no service. A small, private family gathering will be held to celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers, if friends and family so wish, a scholarship in Larrie’s name has been set up with the Brokenhead River Community Foundation and donations may be sent to Box 2225 Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0.
