It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Laurie Horbatiuk, loving father, son, brother, uncle and “papa”. He passed away peacefully at home at the age of 71 in Lac du Bonnet, MB, which was his home both in childhood and retirement. Laurie was a comedian at heart, and his dry sense of humor knew few boundaries. He was known for his larger-than-life personality, dwarfed only by his even larger heart. A straight shooter, Laurie told it like he saw it, was caring but firm and notoriously stoic. He could fix, build or MacGyver anything—always helping neighbors, family, and friends. He will be remembered for his love of music, hockey, coaching, hunting, golfing, family pride, frugalness, and that dang blue truck that didn’t owe him a dime!
He is survived by: his three children who inherited his quick wit and resourcefulness, Jaret (Tamara) Horbatiuk, Catherine Horbatiuk, and Andrew Horbatiuk; his favorite brother Peter (Olga) Gula; his blended family and loved ones whom he cherished dearly; Connie James, Connie (Jordan) Eyolfson, Corrine (Brian) Harding, Christine (Will), Desneige Proulx; and his grandchildren, Easton Horbatiuk, Julia Horbatiuk, Jordyn Makela, Carmen Eyolfson, Carter Eyolfson, DJ Thibert, Dalayna Thibert, Emily Makela, and Ava Gignac. He is predeceased by his favorite sister Gladys Homeniuk (nee Gula), and first wife Susan Horbatiuk (nee Bachinsky), who remained a close and cherished friend. Laurie will be missed by many loving cousins, family and friends, and even more so by his fur children Hector & Sadie.
A celebration of life will take place in Lac du Bonnet on June 10, 2023. Details to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the HERO’S Alliance in Lac du Bonnet would greatly be appreciated: www.herosalliance.ca/#donations
