Lydia Eck

February 6, 1932 — December 7, 2022

February 6, 1932 ~ December 7, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Lydia on December 07, 2022.

She passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family.  Andrea, Karl W., Sigrid, Christa, Gabi, Annette, Nicole and Bernd and the German branch of her family will always carry her memory in their hearts.  Lydia was predeceased by her parents, all her siblings and her husband Fritz in 2002.

Almost 91 years ago, she was born into a working-class family as the youngest of 5 children. They lived in the city of Mannheim/Germany and there she learned the values of family life. The foundation of her young life was shattered, when war began to turn her life upside down. Bombs destroyed her home and survival became the order of the day.

To escape the danger and hunger she was sent to complete strangers all over the country. The war robbed her of her childhood and taught her the harsh lesson of an empty stomach. But, a few years later she met Fritz, the love of her life at my grandparents farm – a place she had picked to work in order to escape hunger.

Lydia and Fritz got married in 1954 and worked hand in hand towards a better future. Our mother was always the centre of our family.  She held all the strings (emotional and practical) in her hands and was happy to move everyone to a brighter future.

In 1982, after selling their farm,  she followed her children to a new country. Settling at the farm in Whitemouth, Lydia made many new friends and was able to enjoy the freedom of retirement. She loved to watch tennis and later crossword puzzles became her passion. Working in the yard and seeing her at her table looking out, I always knew the world was in order. Unfortunately, her health started to decline slowly and for years she faced her pain with courage and without complains.

On December 07, her journey of life came to a peaceful end.  We would like to thank all her friends for being there for her. Especially Helga and Gustav Rossol, thank you. Dr Garg for his compassion and going the extra mile for her and Suzanne for almost performing a miracle on her old legs.

A small family service will be held at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Ave. E. Beausejour on Wednesday, December 14 at 1:00 pm. Lydia will be laid to rest at the Oldenburg Cemetery, River Hills. MB.
