Lyons Wlliam (Bill) Dowbyhuz

September 23, 1950 — September 11, 2025

On Thursday, September 11th, Bill peacefully passed away with his wife Cathy by his side.

Bill is survived by his children Grant (Rhonda), Trevor, Wade (Chantal), and Stacey (Jeremy); grandchildren Justin, Ryan, Leah, Alexander, Kyleigh, Noah and Avery; and great grandchildren Tyson, Jaxon, Maddox and Azaria. He is also survived by his two sisters Geri (Doug) and Bonnie as well as brothers-in-law Vern (Annette), John (Leanne), Jeff (Debbie), Dennis (Karen) and sisters-in-law Cheryl and Denise (Larry) and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was born and raised in Transcona. As a young man he held a few different jobs before making the City of Winnipeg his career choice for 37 years. During those years he held various positions in different departments ending his time with the city as Supervisor of Fleet Management.

After meeting Cathy, they built their house and settled in Lorette where they raised their family. It was there that his deep commitment to community life truly took root – a passion that never wavered. Eventually, Whitemouth became their permanent home, and he quickly became a dedicated and familiar presence in local organizations. He poured his heart into every effort to improve and support the community he loved. A devoted volunteer with the Whitemouth Recreation Association for over 20 years, he also took an active role in municipal affairs, proudly serving as Councillor and then Reeve His contributions left a lasting impact and reflected his unwavering belief in giving back. He was a remarkably social and approachable person, able to engage in meaningful conversation with anyone, on any topic. His warmth and ease made everyone feel welcome and heard.

Bill was a truly generous soul, always willing to help others without hesitation. The saying that he would give you the shirt off his back was more than a cliché – it was a reflection of how he lived his life. He was deeply admired, well-liked, and respected by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bill’s deep love for the outdoors was truly something to admire. Whether it was hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, or simply enjoying a quad ride with friends, that’s where he felt at peace. He spent countless years passing down his passion for nature to his children and grandchildren – teaching them the joys of casting a line, ice fishing, and hunting for chicken or deer. Those moments were more than just pastimes; they were lessons, memories, and values that will live on for generations. His knowledge and love for the outdoors were a gift, and his legacy will never be lost.

Bill will be truly missed by his family, friends and community, however his kindness, strength, and spirit will continue to live on in all who knew him.

Bill’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Palliative Care Program and also to the compassionate staff at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre for the exceptional care and kindness shown during his final days. The support brought not only comfort to him, but to his loved ones as well.

In honor of Bill’s deep love for the community, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Whitemouth Recreation Association or the Whitemouth & District Lions Club in his memory.

There will be a Celebration of Bill’s life held on Tuesday, September 30th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Whitemouth Hall.
