Richard “Rick” Michael Oberick

November 22, 1949 — October 21, 2022

November 22, 1949 ~ October 21, 2022

It is with heavy hearts, that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Rick, on Friday, October 21, 2022 at the age of 72.   Rick was surrounded by his loving wife and sons.

Rick is survived by his wife, Doreen; three sons, Shawn, Cory (Karleigh), and Kyle; and grandson, Trent.  Also, by Karleigh’s boys, Evan and Brett, who had a very special place in Rick’s heart.  Rick is survived by his two brothers Ron (Linda) and Wayne (Angel); his sister, Pat (Robert); his Litke in-laws and many nephews and nieces.

Rick was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Olga Oberick, and grandson, Dylan.

Rick was born November 22, 1949 at Selkirk General Hospital and lived most of his life in Garson. Rick started his working career at Canada Packers (17 years) and then worked at Milner Ridge Corrections (23 years). Working at Milner he made lasting friendships, and we know his buddies will miss him.  Rick retired in 2011 and worked on home projects and enjoyed fishing in his spare time.

Rick and Doreen were high school sweethearts and were married on June 2, 1973.  Rick and Doreen travelled to parts of the US, Mexico, Cuba, and parts of western Canada. Rick treasured his visits with Kyle; we were fortunate to explore so many parts of beautiful BC.  When the boys were younger, every year we packed up the cars and went for a week to Nutimik Lake where we would fish, hike, and appreciate nature.

Rick enjoyed his Maxwell House instant coffee, cigarettes, and Friday night poker games (sometimes all-nighters). He would do his daily walk to the local store to buy his pro-line tickets and shoot the breeze with his Garson buddies.  In his man cave, his TV (dial set on AMC and sports channel) played all day long while he worked in his garage, and he would relax listening to his vinyl records. His hobby was restoring old furniture, working in his flower gardens, and gardening.  He loved family time and helped his boys with all their projects.  We will remember Rick for his kind, caring and calm manner. He instilled in his boys the value of hard work, always showing compassion and respect for others. He enjoyed helping Doreen with cooking, canning, and always made extra so his boys could take leftovers home.

A celebration of Rick’s life will be on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Avenue East, Beausejour, Manitoba.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Rick’s memory to Cancer Care Manitoba, Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, or to a charity of your choice.

“Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.”

Our hearts are broken and our lives have changed forever.
