Ronald Lockhart McDowall

Jul 17, 1946 — Jun 18, 2026

Peacefully, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather Ronald Lockhart McDowall, passed away on June 18, 2026, at the age of 79, at Pinawa Hospital.

Ron was born on July 17, 1946, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a young man, he came to Pinawa for work and decided that it was the place where he wished to live. He was a hard worker and started making a living as a barber, known as "Chopper" by clients and friends. He also worked as an ice-maker for the Pinawa Club. Lastly, Ron later worked for the LGD of Pinawa, where he often went beyond the call of duty to ensure a safe water supply and assist members of the community with travel and other needs. In 1992, he received a rare "Certificate of Commendation" from the Province of Manitoba in recognition of achieving a perfect operating record for water quality, which is an extremely exacting task.

Ron was also a gifted artist, and dealt with every medium except oils. He loved nature and animals, and his many paintings reflected this. He kept a beautiful garden, which also displayed his artistic talents. Additionally, he painted a mural at the Pinawa pool.

Ron was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed watching golf, baseball, hockey and football. He was a good curler, golfer and fisherman. In his younger days, he was known as a good dancer, nick-named "Fred Astaire". He was a life-long learner and started off his days reading the daily newspaper from front page to last, with a hot cup of coffee.

He once said that the best thing he ever did in his life was to quit drinking. He cherished his sobriety.

Ron was pre-deceased by his parents, Herb and Gwen, and is survived by his loving wife Barbara, his siblings Barbara, Valerie and Herb, and by 4 children, Elyse, Elayna, Ross and Cassandra, and their respective families. He is also survived by his "little buddy", Ralfee.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ron's name to the Arthritis Society Canada, Pinawa Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
