Roy Charles Howie

Jun 24, 1952 — Oct 11, 2026

On Thanksgiving morning quietly and unintrusively as he lived life, Roy passed away in the comfort of his home with family. Roy received a devastating diagnosis of advanced metastatic pancreatic cancer this past July.

Roy is survived by his wife, Heather and children, Bryan (Amanda) Howie, Matthew (Krystine) Howie, Kellen Read, Devyn Read, and Cody Read; his grandchildren Aria and Navy Howie, Theodore Read; siblings Bruce (Ev) Howie, Brian (Nancy) Howie, Ruth Werhun, Craig (Wendy) Howie; along with his nieces and nephews with whom Roy had close relationships. Roy is also survived by Heather’s siblings and their families.

Sadly, Roy was predeceased by his eldest son Patrick Howie who he missed immensely; sister, Janice (Terry) Iwanko; nephew, Kevin Howie; parents Anne and Don Howie; in-laws Lainy and Leon Ruben, Helen and Bob McKenzie.

Roy was raised in West Kildonan, graduating from Garden City Collegiate in 1968. An avid sports enthusiast Roy played baseball and hockey for the West Kildonan North Stars and Knights. Roy loved to share his achievements and had an incredible memory for games and plays from many years ago and often spoke of his teammates. Roy and his sibling enjoyed many years of fun at the family cottage at Nutimik Lake, where he acquired his lifelong passion for fishing and the beauty of the outdoors. He shared endless fond memories of experiences and friendships growing up at the lake.

Upon graduation from University of Winnipeg with a degree in science, Roy relocated and made Falcon Lake his home. There he started his 34-year career with Manitoba Government - Parks Branch, retiring in 2008 from his position as Work Supervisor. Together with Lisa they welcomed their sons Patrick, Bryan, and Matthew into their family.

In 2000 Roy and Heather blended their families. Roy took every opportunity with the boys to teach and offer guidance, instilling manners, respect, patience, kindness, strong work ethic, and the importance of family in them. As taught by his father and siblings, Roy passed on the gift of his knowledge and skills of maintaining and repairing almost anything, Building, fishing, sports, and many other valuable life lessons. Roy had a wealth of knowledge that he freely shared. Roy was actively involved in the Falcon Community, always willing to help with what ever was asked of him and developed many lifelong friendships which remained until his time of passing.

Moving to Dorothy Lake in 2010, Roy enjoyed being closer to his siblings and to where his passion for the lake began. Roy accepted a position as work supervisor for the RM of Whitemouth, retiring in 2017, allowing him time to fulfil his dream of spending his days fishing, and using his handy man skills enhancing our home.

Roy was passionate about sports. Spending hours fishing from an early age, he had a vast knowledge and experiences that often others called upon. Roy continued playing hockey until his mid 40’s in both Falcon Lake and Kenora.

Above all Roy truly cherished family, being a husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle and appreciated every opportunity to spend time together.

Roy leaves behind his legacy of love, selflessness, friendship and countless treasured memories. He was a gift. He was our steady who was always there for us. We miss him.

Our family would like to express our gratitude to our family, friends and community who have supported us with daily visits, providing nourishment, organizing a work party, running errands and so much more through this very intense and devastating time.
