Peacefully on Thursday, July 19, 2012, Bertha Novak, aged 98 years, passed away at the Beausejour Hospital.  She was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, Walter, who died on December 23, 2002.  She is survived by her daughter Waltra Gilbert and her husband John and their daughters Jean and Michelle (Mike); son Robert and his wife Joann and their children Kristin (great grandson Mason), Jessica and Robert, sister-in-law Lorene Stepaniuk and many nieces and nephews.

Bertha was born on November 9, 1913 in Beausejour where she spent her entire life.  She spent many years employed at the Beausejour Post Office.  Bertha was a spiritual woman and spent many years of volunteerism serving her community.  As a Woman’s Institute Member from 1941 through the seventies, she fulfilled many executive roles.  Bertha was also a life member in the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League.  Along with husband Walter, she spent many years delivering “Meals on Wheels” to local residents.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.  She spent the last few years of her life at Stony Plains Terrace in Beausejour.  She will be missed and remembered by all she touched.

Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Monday, July 23 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, 823 Park Avenue, Beausejour with Rt. Rev. Cannon Walter Klimchuk, the celebrant.  Interment was held in the Holy Ghost Parish Cemetery.

Pallbearers included her grandson Robert Walter Novak, her son-in-law John Gilbert, Mike Harmer and her nephews Gerry Novak, Garry Stepaniuk and Bernie Pyra.

The family thanks Dr. Schmidt and the staff at the Beausejour Hospital for their care and concern.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Bertha’s memory may be made to the Beausejour Hospital, Box 1690, Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0
