Ferdinand Chagnon

February 19, 1930 to January 17, 2010

Peacefully on Sunday, January 17, 2010 at the Pine Falls Hospital, Fern passed away at the age of 79 years. Fern is survived by his brother Gerard (Margaret) of Great Falls, MB and his sister Lillian Hunchak (Arthur) of Langley, BC and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. Fern was predeceased by his parents Oscar and Dora, his brothers Romeo, Victor, Hector, his twin Lucien and his sister Annette.

Fern was born on February 19, 1930 at home on the family farm in Mud Falls, MB. He worked hard his entire life. He cut pulp wood for years, worked at the fisheries and Manitoba Hydro from where he retired. He fought his first battle with cancer in 1990 prior to his retirement. During his retirement he kept busy with his scrap iron work and the upkeep of his house and yard. He could be seen out walking regularly. He enjoyed the company of his friend Maynard and together they enjoyed the companionship of their dogs Copper, Charlie and Patches. Fern was a quiet, gentle man with a good sense of humor, he always enjoyed a good laugh. He will be remembered for his friendly, easy going manner and his generous and giving ways. Fern was a religious man who was very devoted to his Catholic faith.

He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Thanks to the staff of the Pine Falls Hospital for taking such good care of Fern and thanks for doing it with kindness and compassion. Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 23 at Notre Dame du Laus Roman Catholic Church, Powerview, MB with Rev. Fr. James Gray presiding. Prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 22 at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Avenue East, Beausejour, MB. The pallbearers will be Fern’s nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pine Falls Hospital, Pine Falls, MB R0E 1M0.

God saw you getting tired,
When a cure was not to be,
So He closed His arms around you,
And whispered, Come to me.
You didn’t deserve what you went through,
So He took you Home to rest,
God’s garden must be beautiful,
For He only takes the best.
