John Kulikowsky

August 21, 1917 to August 10, 2010

It is with tremendous sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of our beloved dad, John Kulikowsky of Lac du Bonnet on August 10, 2010 at the age of 92. John is survived by his wife Jean, son Jeff and daughter-in-law Kelly. Dad was born on August 21, 1917 in Poplar Bay, MB. His parents both immigrated from Russia and settled into this remote area. Dad had seven others siblings. Having been raised in this type of an environment, our father was an extremely hard working, proud and simple man – a true pioneer. Dad was the happiest when he was at work in his garden, cooking, canning, or enjoying the fruits of his labour at the kitchen table. In 1942 Dad had to leave his family farm in Poplar Bay and when his country called, he proudly and honourably served on active service with the Canadian Army until 1946. As soon as our father could, he found himself a job at Winnipeg Hydro, in Pointe du Bois, in June of 1946. Dad was employed their until the mid 1950s. At this time, John moved out west to Vancouver and became a journey iron worker. John helped build some of the big bridges and buildings in Vancouver. After John completed some of these tasks in his journey of life, he returned to his original surroundings. Dad got back to work quickly again at Hydro and was employed in Pointe du Bois until he retired at the age of 71 in 1986. He worked for Winnipeg Hydro for close to 40 years. Dad was a very caring and giving man. He gave his time freely and honourably and looked after his wife who had Alzheimer’s and his sister Lucy, until their passing. When our father did this, he had a purpose in life – to help others. He went far beyond what a normal person’s responsibilities would be, for his family. The family would like to express their utmost thanks to all the staff employed throughout the provincial civil service who have helped our family and continue to help. A celebration of our father’s life will be held in Beausejour on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 204-268-3510. Interment to follow at the Lac du Bonnet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home Attention to the Residents’ Council Account .
