Joseph Szalai

April 15, 1962 ~ April 11, 2022

Its with great sadness, we announce the passing of Joseph (Strawboss) Szalai, beloved brother, uncle, great uncle and friend, on Monday, April 11, 2022, at the Beausejour Hospital, at the age of 59.

He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family; Brothers: Johnny, George (Virginia), Otto (Rhonda), Tibor and Alex. Sisters: Natalie Schinkel and Terry Steinke (Glenn). Sister-in-laws: Lois and Mary, and numerous nephews/nieces and great nephews and nieces and friends.

He was predeceased by his mom and dad, brothers Frank and Peter, sister Klara, sister-in-law Darlene and nephew Joseph.

Joe enjoyed hunting with friends and family. He loved and enjoyed the many people in his life. No one could make Joe smile and laugh as much of as the kids in his life.  ‘Uncle’ Joe was always ready with a quick teasing word and treats.

Joe was passionate about food and enjoyed cooking and sharing meals with others.  He was always proud of his culinary pursuits and if you were fortunate you got to share in the results – a perfectly made apple streusel from scratch, his home-made sausage or something delectable straight out of his meat smoker or oven.

We would like to give a special thanks to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital, Pinawa Hospital and the Beausejour Hospital for their care and compassion they showed Joe throughout his stay.

As per Joe’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Beausejour Hospital T.V. Fund, Box 1614, Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0.

Getting to know Joe and provide care to him over the years was a great pleasure. I always enjoyed his joking nature, never taking anything too seriously. But will also remember the times we had real talks. My most sincere condolences.

My condolences to everyone. Strawboss was incredibly kind to me the year I worked at Otto’s Upholstery. I spoke to him last Christmas and it was so good to reconnect. Though it is hard to have him gone, I look forward to him getting to meet my baby Rachel, who passed away recently, in heaven. He will be kind and teasing to her just as he was to me.
